The Primitive of a New Art:
The Cinema of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièlle Huillet

Jean-Marie Straub died in November, 20 of 2022, and many special screenings of his films happened in movie theatres.  This essay was made from images of movies exhibited in Retrospective à Travers les Arts, organized by Films Capricci, with the support of Cahiers du Cinéma and CNC. 


They are: Amerika, Class Relations (Rapports de Classe, 1984); Machorka-Muff (1963); Othon (1970); Moses and Aron (Moses und Aaron, 1975); Chronicles of Anna Madalena Bach (Chronik der Anna Magdalena Bach, 1968);  Introduction to Arnold Schoenberg's Accompainment to a Cinematic Scene (Einleitung zu Arnold Schoenbergs Begleitmusik zu einer Lichtspielscene, 1973); Every Revolution is a Dice Roll (Toute révolution est un coup de dés, 1977); narration and images of A Visit to The Louvre (Une Visite au Louvre, 2004) and soundtrack from Moses and Aron.
